The Annandale Project
Who and What is the Annandale Project?
College Interns from Fairfax County, Va who through community service, are educating and teaching elderly how to use the Internet; creating a Directory for the City of Annandale, and Submitting a Project for School Credit to Graduate.
The First Stage is start up, involving printed materials for the project, website creation, and project management.
Stage Two is the growth stage, implementing the project, and enlarging both student and neighborhood participation.
Stage 3 is the creation of a Local Mobile Application which will be invaluable to the entire community and be published in three languages.
Annandale, VA is being used as a Test Village to Create a Comprehensive Online Directory because it is a manageably sized city with about 55,000 residents within the greater Fairfax, VA Metropolitan Area. There are about 1250 Businesses within Annandale proper and one of the major student goals is to get every business listed within the Directory. By Creating a City Directory Students will learn to gather information from the Internet, In Person, By Mail, and Market the Directory Concept. This will help students in Stage 2 Develop a thriving business with revenue and expenses, but also help them in Stage 3 create Micro Mobile Local Application for Consumers.
Annandale is also unique and will pose unique challenges for the students for some other reasons: There are many languages and demographics within the Corporate Limits. Korean, Vietnamese, English, and Spanish comprise the greatest languages spoken, and Annandale has a large concentration of adults which are not using the Internet. One of the Student Goals is to increase Internet Usage amongst adults by creating social media accounts for the adults, creating Web Pages for their Businesses, and teaching them Mobile Marketing Techniques to keep pace with the changing landscape. Students will create workshops for older adults and english as Second Language Adults. Students will learn to undertake community service as part of their own Professional Growth. This remarkable mix of demographics, location, population density, and proximity to college campuses, and name recognition give the Annandale Project an additional purpose: Community Outreach. By teaching students that volunteerism is an important part of professional life, The Annandale Project is providing a well rounded set of skills for future graduates.
The Project is Broken Down into three stages, as Students Graduate and move into the private sector or move back to their home states, the Annandale Project can continue to provide a learning based project for Student Participation from various Campuses. Students are able to bring various skills to the Annandale Project which includes Marketing, Advertising, Accounting, Business Management, Project Writing, Project Management, Social Media Management, Mobile Application Development; Team Building Skills, Volunteerism, and Group Dynamics.
Annandale Businesses are asked to give students their support and time in this ongoing project to benefit the Annandale Community.
Businesses will be asked to provide information at first to complete the comprehensive directory. The student goal is to leave no stone unturned, to include every single business in Annandale proper in the Directory. This will benefit local businesses by providing invaluable backlinks to existing websites, and catalogue those businesses which do not already have a webpage, to give them an online presence.
Since interns and students may move on to professional careers, there is need to have this project overseen by a professional, local firm in Annandale. ProNetworkBuild has agreed to sponsor The Annandale Project to insure that it is seen through to completion and to archive and curate the project.
Students rely on the support of local merchants to keep The Annandale Project properly funded. In addition to local merchant support, students will participate in Crowdfunding to evaluate and monitor how actual businesses raise start up capital.
